Earth Spirit Taiko grew out of the Drum for Fun class at Randolph Community College. Formed in 2007, the group has played numerous concerts in churches, schools, International Festivals. the NC Zoo, etc. Their repertoire includes many traditional Japanese Taiko songs, rhythms of the Master Drummers of Burundi, Africa and some pieces influenced by modern composers. Members of the group have started additional Taiko programs at the schools where they teach and with Special Needs persons. In addition to concerts, the group puts on workshops to show others just how much fun it is to play Taiko. We are also developing workshops to help teachers begin their own Taiko programs in their school. We have expanded our purpose to include helping those in need in our community. “Asking for food donations for the Backpack Pals program or the Second Harvest Food Bank are just two ways of giving back to the community during a concert.” You might say, “We Drum for Food”.
